Aldi Eltoro -Taco Kit

Ok,
My first "review" is for Aldi Stores Taco Kit,

Now before we start, Why Aldi?
well before i moved interstate I imagined there would be plenty of jobs for all, Little did i know that after 2 months and 100's of job applications later I would spend all of my life savings and be begging the goverment for assistance, THis was NOT part of my plan, I was to move to the City and find work, Any work. So after 8 weeks of eating pretty crap fatty food, (mainly sausages) I thought It was about time I tried to shed some of the many kilos ive put on while Ive been looking for work. Having just been granted the "dole" I went to my local supermarket and was shocked at the prices, The price of everyday items seems to be almost twice what i was paying in Newcastle (N.S.W.) But here in Brisbane (Q.L.D.) people seem not to mind payng this to survice.
So I did the senible thing and went to ALDI, Yes I know Some of ALDI's prices are not That great but for the most part the products are cheaper.

So for the first review

Ok so Im no "foodie" Ive been in and out of very poor paying jobs for the last 10 years Ive never really "eaten out" the closest being "fast food palaces", I know this may sound wierd but it's all true, even eating at a local "RSL" is WAY beyond my means. But i know what I like and when you get to my stage, counting the cents till "death day" It may all start to make sence.

Now when you go to the other supermarkets the "usual" Taco kit will come wth 6-8 Tacos
This kit has 15! yesiree 15, But this may come as a letdown, read on...

The cost of the Pack was 3.99 not bad concidering the "brand name" packs start at 7$ and come with fewer tacos.

The other ingreediants needed are (all purchased at ALDI)
500g mince 5$ This could have been cheaper elsewhere.
half a Lettuce
Grated cheese which was $4.19 for 500g, this may have been cheaper at Wollies
2 Tomatoes
1 teaspoon of oil

The preperation is pretty simple, Brown the meet add the water and packet of seasoning and serve with cheese, tomato and drissle with another packet from the box, The sause.

Some suggestions to make this even leaner, when browning the mice after about 2 mins add a little water, I know water will "come out" of the mince, but after its been browned for a bit strain ALL the water off, this will drain a lot of the oil and other fats that are in the mice, then leave sit while preparing the cup of water with the Taco Seasoning.
And thats about it.
The flavor was quite good, in fact exactly the same as the brand name packs.
when i went back to make another I added a splash of "tobasco sause" into the mince and gave it a good stir, I use a Tobasco sause "ripoff" called Nazirs "fiery hot chilli sause" this costs a 3rd of the "brand name" Product and is the same in "spicyness" and flavor.

The main problem i have with the ALDI ELTora brand is to make 15 of these you would need to use very little meat in each one. the pic on the packet has MORE meat in each taco that i had used which by my calculation would make about 6-8 way of the 15 mark.
But still you can buy the seasonig and the sause at coles or wollies in the home brand range quite cheaply and make up some more mince to use the other tacos.

So how about that ALDI cheese, is it any good?
Well if i needed any Grated Cheese in the past I would always use Homebrand or Saving's brand.
which cost about the same or more, well the aldi one is suprisingly good, its got a great flavor the other "cheap" grated cheeses lack.

Please note in the below "finished" photos, I had omited the sause!
they look AND TASTE much better with it added!.

The lettce looks a bit Brown in the piccys, it wasnt so bad while eating!
Remember thease are all taken with a chepo digital camera, I am a qualified photographer and know the whole process for taking "nice" photo's of food. But I want to show what it really looks like, not the "fakeo" pics on the box.

  1. I live in ALDI's homeland, Germany, where there is no longer any stigma attached to paying a third less for your groceries than you would at the other supermarkets! Fruit and vegs and dairy products are always top quality and very fresh - in fact if you get there late in the day you are likely to face stockouts so you know everything is fresh and hasn't been lying on the shelf for weeks. I like shopping when there is only about 1000 items to choose from rather than 100,000. Do I really need a choice of 20 washing powders, shampoos, tomato sauce, etc?
The food trade is so competitive due to Aldi, Lidl and other "me too" discount chains that Walmart was forced to withdraw from the German market after loss-making for 7 years!
Good luck with you job search!
